Cameron County has received a significant financial boost with a $1 million grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, dedicated to the development of the Santa Maria Community Center. This funding aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by providing a range of health, wellness, and educational services, according to Cameron County Announcements & Press Releases.

The community center, which will be situated at the recently opened Santa Maria Community Park, is set to offer a variety of programs and services. These include preventive health services, fitness and nutrition classes, mental health resources, and educational programming. The facility will also provide flexible event spaces, a teaching kitchen, accessible restrooms, an information technology room, storage areas, and a backup generator.

County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. expressed gratitude for the grant, stating, "This $1 million grant represents a significant investment in the future of Santa Maria, the surrounding communities, and Cameron County." He emphasized the foundation's role in creating a center where families and residents can access resources that promote health, wellness, and an improved quality of life.

Commissioner Precinct 4 Gus Ruiz highlighted the community center's role as more than just a building, but a hub for community growth and resource access. "This center will be more than a building. It will be a place where people come together, opportunities are created, and residents can access important health and wellness resources and participate in educational and community programs," Ruiz stated.

Judy Quisenberry, Executive Director of the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, also expressed excitement about the project, noting the importance of having programs that promote health and wellness close to home.

The Santa Maria Community Park, which officially opened in May 2026, spans approximately 10.83 acres and includes various recreational amenities such as a covered basketball court, lighted baseball and soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, a Universal Design splash pad and playground, a walking trail, concessions and restroom facilities, picnic areas, native landscaping, and solar lighting.

This development is poised to be a cornerstone for community engagement and support, offering residents a comprehensive space for health, wellness, and educational activities in Cameron County.
