The City of Laredo is set to implement a new TradeTag enforcement policy aimed at improving traffic flow at its international bridges, according to the City of Laredo Newsroom. This policy, effective from August 17, 2026, is designed to reduce commercial truck U-turns caused by insufficient TradeTag account balances, thereby enhancing the efficiency of freight movement through Port Laredo's international bridge system.

Elsa Hinojosa, director of the Laredo Bridge System, emphasized the importance of this policy in minimizing congestion while maintaining accountability for account holders. "This policy helps us keep freight moving while reducing avoidable congestion at our commercial bridges," she stated. The city has engaged in extensive outreach efforts, including digital communications and stakeholder engagement, to prepare commercial carriers, customs brokers, freight forwarders, and fleet operators for these changes.

Under the new policy, commercial vehicles arriving at the bridge with insufficient TradeTag balances will still be allowed to cross, but administrative penalties will be imposed. The penalties include a $500 fine for the first violation, $1,000 for the second, and $2,000 for the third, along with applicable bridge tolls. Accounts with more than three violations may face suspension and a $200 reactivation fee.

Commercial account holders are encouraged to maintain a valid credit card on file, enroll in automatic account replenishment, and verify sufficient funds before arriving at the bridge. More information is available on the Laredo TradeTag website.

DoubleTree Hotel Fire Response

In other news, Laredo is managing the aftermath of a major fire at the DoubleTree Hotel, which occurred in the early hours of October 7, 2026. The City of Laredo Newsroom reported that the Laredo Fire Department responded swiftly, with around 80 firefighters tackling the blaze that affected the fifth and sixth floors and the parking area.

The hotel, which had 203 registered guests at the time, saw four individuals transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, while four others sought medical attention independently. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. However, the building has been deemed structurally unsafe, and emergency operations are paused pending further inspections by a qualified structural expert.

The City of Laredo has established a temporary displacement area at the Haynes Recreation Center for those affected by the fire. As of the morning after the incident, 21 individuals remained at the center. DoubleTree management is coordinating transportation and additional assistance for displaced guests.

Road closures and traffic disruptions are expected to continue in the area surrounding the hotel, with portions of San Bernardo Avenue, Santa Ursula Avenue, and Garden Street affected. Motorists are advised to adjust their commutes and follow directions from law enforcement personnel.

In response to the incident, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño has issued an emergency declaration. The city is requesting patience from the community as crews continue their response, assessment, and recovery efforts.
