San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has been awarded two federal grants totaling $43,250,959, marking the largest single Airport Improvement Program (AIP) award in the airport’s history, according to a release from the City of San Antonio. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided these funds to advance drainage improvements to the airfield, a crucial component of the ongoing construction of the new terminal complex.
City Manager Erik Walsh emphasized the significance of these grants, stating, "These federal investments will help strengthen a critical piece of San Antonio's transportation infrastructure while supporting the continued development of our airport." The grants are expected to enhance the airport's ability to manage stormwater, thereby reducing the risk of bird strikes and protecting operations during heavy rainfall.
The drainage improvements are part of SAT’s broader Airfield Safety Enhancement and Improvements Program (ASEIP), a multi-phase initiative aimed at modernizing the airport’s infrastructure. Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for the City of San Antonio Aviation Department, noted that while such projects may occur behind the scenes, their benefits will be felt throughout the airport. "This drainage improvement is an important investment in the airport’s infrastructure and will help support a safe, resilient, and efficient operation for years to come," Saenz stated.
The project includes constructing a new underground stormwater system to channel water from the airfield and new terminal development area to Salado Creek, addressing a long-standing drainage deficiency. This initiative builds on nearly $6.8 million previously secured for related design and construction work.
Since 2020, SAT has received $217.7 million in federal funds, including $99.2 million for airfield projects and $114.5 million for terminal projects, such as the Terminal A Gate Expansion and new Terminal C. Saenz acknowledged the support of San Antonio’s congressional delegation in advocating for continued federal investment in the city’s aviation infrastructure.
The airport has a strong track record of delivering federally funded projects on schedule and within budget. As SAT advances its long-term modernization program, additional phases of airfield infrastructure improvements are anticipated in coordination with federal partners.
